It is because the Paul perceived by Miriam here as sparing ‘neither himself nor anybody else’ is effectively entrusted with a considerable part of the narrative viewpoint in Sons and Lovers. In this sense the book does indeed have, if not two competing voices, then a divided voice within its formally single narration.
