She reported having had a violent row with her father over the phone, telling him that many of her problems were the result of his setting up the restaurant. She then spoke of the other side of her feeling, namely her guilt and remorse. After all, the restaurant had been his life's work, and moreover he now has a heart condition and she was afraid that she might upset him so much that he would die. She then added a story which revealed something malignant in the relation between her father and his own father, which may throw light on her father's and the family's pathology.

In other words the patient must both experience X and understand the nature of the defences, in relation to C and P; must also understand the similarities between the two areas; and (as described above) this can usually only be done via the same kind of experience and understanding in the transference. Of course such a scheme is in no way rigid, and in practice there are many variations on the order described; but in most successsful therapies - whatever the order - all these elements will be found to have been present at one time or another.

The patient agreed that she feels very helpless here, but there was no greater response than this.
