Yet when we look at the reasons for his complaints more closely, something else emerges. The incidents about which he complains to his daughter are the cries of the dog and the cat, a young hooligan who passes in the night, singing, and the water gurgling in the pipe above his head. Clearly, although he does not remember the fact, these correspond to the woman with her little pig, the young man who came singing over the waters and the music of the stream. It is the subconscious link with what he has lost that makes these things so irritating to him.

In so doing she passes a subconscious judgment on the atmosphere in which they have surrounded themselves. There is another symbolic occasion when she plays again for the Vyses, having heard that George will be arriving. 16 Cecil asks her to follow this with the garden music of Parsifal, but she refuses, and then turns to see that George has entered without interrupting.
