The above concerns, or disappointments, on the part of various constituencies echo, at least in part, concerns over the moral permissibility of stem cell research itself. The catalogue of moral questions is extensive: Is there a morally relevant distinction between funding the destruction of embryos and funding research only on cells taken from destroyed embryos? How should informed consent of donors of embryos be promoted and protected? Should we revisit the issue of the moral permissibility of in vitro fertilization (IVF) and other reproductive technologies?
